St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton traces its roots to the early Catholic settlers of the 1870s who traveled long distances to attend Mass, first journeying to Cawker City in 1872 before a priest from Concordia began celebrating Mass locally in a dugout home around 1875. As the Catholic population grew, a modest frame church was constructed in 1880, with a visiting priest offering Mass monthly. The parish was formally established in 1884, marking the beginning of an organized and enduring Catholic presence in the community. A rectory was built in 1887, and by 1899 a larger, more permanent church replaced the original structure to accommodate the expanding congregation. Education quickly became central to parish life; in 1919 the parish constructed what became Tipton Catholic High School, welcoming its first graduating class in 1921 and establishing a tradition of strong Catholic education that continues to shape the community. A devastating fire in 1952 destroyed the church building, but parishioners responded with determination, completing and dedicating a new church in 1954. In the years that followed, the parish enhanced the beauty of the church with the installation of three bronze bells in 1963 and stained-glass windows in 1967. Throughout its history, St. Boniface has remained a spiritual and cultural cornerstone of the region, fostering faith, education, and community life. Today, the parish continues its mission of worship, sacramental life, and service as part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salina, carrying forward more than a century of Catholic tradition in rural Kansas.
